Italy surpasses China in number of coronavirus deaths

Italy recorded 41,035 cases and 3,405 deaths from nCoV, while the number of deaths in China was 3,245.

The Italian Civil Protection Agency said yesterday that this country had added 5,322 new cases, which increase the number of people infected with nCoV to 41,035. The number of deaths by Covid-19 in this country is 3,405, increase of 427 cases compared to the previous day, making Italy the world’s deadliest center of the outbreak.

The death rate in Italy is 8.3%, double the average of global. The aging population and overcrowded hospitals are two of the causes of high death rates in this country. Chinese health experts who helped Italy deal with Covid-19 said that the measures imposed in the areas that heavily affected of northern Italy were not drastic.

“The Lombardy situation is similar to what we experience two months ago in Wuhan, the Covid-19 epidemic,” said Sun Shuopeng, vice president of the Chinese Red Cross Association at a Milan press conference yesterday. “In Wuhan, after a month of applying the blockade policy, we saw a downward trend from the peak of the epidemic. In Milan, the most heavily affected area, there was no strict blockade: public transportation works, people walk, have dinner, party in hotels and don’t wear masks. We need people to join the battle and follow the policy.”

He advised the Italians to stop all economic activities and restrict travel. “People should just stay home,” Sun added.

Covid-19 appeared in 178 countries and territories after the spreading in Wuhan in December 2019, causing nearly 245,000 people were infected, over 10,000 dead and over 87,000 recovering. The epidemic seems to be under control in China, but it is spreading rapidly in Europe. Countries Spain, Germany, France are recording daily new cases from 1,000-3,000.
